Saskatoon- Amelanchier alnifolia- 'Smokey'
A fruit known by many other names and one of our favorites! Saskatoon, aka juneberry is a native shrub/tree that produces blueberry-like fruits with almond flavored seeds. The fruit is around for just a short time in the beginning of June and is a favorite food of the birds as well, so keep your eyes peeled for ripening fruit and plant more than one! The alnifolia species is a suckering shrub, making for an excellent hedge with dense spacing. Being native to the forest edge, it does well in both full sun and part shade conditions. Height 10-14' and can reach 26'! These plants were grown from seed and so far, are either quite slow to grow, or it is possible that these are going to remain on the smaller side.
