PERMACULTURE ETHICS

As a farm we follow the three main ethics of permaculture: care of the Earth, care for people, and a fair distribution of all forms of wealth.

EARTH CARE -  We are striving to build deeper connections with the land that provides our sustenance through stewardship, utilizing regenerative farming practices, as well as through our personal and communal lives by following the beliefs of “Deep Ecology”. By following these practices we will have a direct positive impact on our beloved Susquehanna river valley.
PEOPLE CARE -  We want to take care of the people working here, those who come here, our greater community, and find a place for others to have an opportunity to be involved in the work and culture of growing food.
FAIR SHARE -  We want to actively address the unfair and unjust ways food, money, power and other forms of wealth are distributed in our communities. We hope to connect our small work here to the work being done everywhere to create a more just, equitable, and ecologically beautiful world for everyone. And we hope to learn and share with you!

REGENERATIVE FARMING PRACTICES

Soil is the foundation of every farm. It's a complex and beautiful living thing that provides the water, minerals, and support that all terrestrial life depends on. This is why it is critical we not only maintain, but improve and regenerate our soil over time to increase our farms capacity to grow nourishing food and leave the land better than we found it for future generations and all life.

Adaptive Grazing

Herbivores in the wild move daily and so do our animals. We provide fresh grass daily to allow our pasture to fully regrow and recover. This increases soil carbon and health, breaks parasite cycles in our livestock, and keeps our animals happy every day.

Silvopasture

Trees are the stars of soil health and carbon sequestration. We are planting hundreds of trees on our pasture to provide shade for our animals, nuts and fruit for our hogs and chickens, produce firewood and lumber, increase soil fertility, and even provide human food as well. We love trees!

Perennial Polycultures

We are planting fruit trees, nut trees, and other perennials into diverse food systems around our farm including a half-acre permaculture orchard and a 5 acre tree crop pasture. This sequesters carbon, feeds the soil, and is climate resilient all while producing nourishing food.

Contour Swales

Water is life. When rain falls on our farm, we want it to stay here, soak in, and hydrate our plants and animals. Contour swales are trenches and berms on contour that slow the flow of water and allow it to infiltrate into the ground. This practice also prevents erosion and captures nutrients while irrigating our trees.
